The Claremont Hotel

Historic 1883 waterfront hotel on Somes Sound in Southwest Harbor, restored in 2021, with rooms, suites, and cottages, the Little Fern restaurant, a botanical spa, and a heated pool.

The Claremont Hotel is the grande dame of Mount Desert Island's quiet western side, a clapboard landmark built in 1883 and one of the only 19th-century hotels to survive on the island. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it reopened in 2021 after a sweeping multimillion-dollar restoration that added contemporary comfort while preserving its period character, with thirty-plus rooms, suites in the Phillips House, and cottages overlooking Somes Sound. The property now includes the Little Fern restaurant, Harry's Bar, the Buttercup Bakery, a heated pool, a botanical spa, and croquet lawns. Independently owned, it is the most storied stay in tranquil Southwest Harbor.
